So just how many people hate their jobs? The statistics say 8 out of 10 people do. Are you one of them?

A Gallup poll in 2017 showed that 85% of people hate their jobs. That is a staggering figure I think you’ll agree.

Those of you who are familiar with the Rat Race Escape Project website will know that my aim is to get you and me out of the rat race that is the 9-5 grind. No more “working for the man” with no job satisfaction or suitable reward for our efforts.

No more Sunday afternoon blues as you think about having to go back to the job you hate tomorrow.

I have chosen affiliate marketing as my vehicle out of the rat race, and you can read all about that here to see if this is the right way for you.

The Gallup Poll makes for very interesting reading. I have broken down the main statistics for you below, but if you would like to read the whole thing click here.

The Statistics

The extensive survey covered 142 countries and asked where the workers engaged, not engaged or actively disengaged. It’s worth exploring what these terms mean briefly so you get a better understanding of just what workers were saying.

  • Engaged: meant the worker was psychologically committed to their job and were likely making a contribution and significant difference within their workforce. These are the guys who are happy to get to work on a Monday morning, they feel fulfilled and rewarded suitably for the work they do.White figure carrying the word job
  • Not engaged: meant the worker was basically going through the motions, they turned up for work and did the bare minimum required to keep their job. They didn’t invest any additional effort to contribute towards the organisation’s goals and they generally lacked motivation.
  • Actively disengaged: meant the worker was grossly unhappy and unproductive at work. Worse still they were more likely to spread negativity to other workers, these are the rotten apples. Workers who seem hell-bent on making life a misery for others and generally bringing down team moral throughout the workplace.

Worldwide 63% of workers indicated they were not engaged (900 million workers) and a staggering 24% were actively disengaged (340 million workers).

“Almost one-quarter of the workforce worldwide are causing negativity and disruption within their workplace. That’s 340 million people who hate their jobs.”

Who are the happiest?

There are some who love their work though. 13% worldwide said they were engaged at work, that’s up from 11% back in 2009/10.

This did vary significantly amongst the various regions surveyed. The US and Canada had the most engaged employees at 29% and those of us who live here Down Under followed closely at 24% (Australia & New Zealand).

That’s nice to know but I still want out of the Rat Race!

Sunday Afternoon Anxiety Disorder (SAAD)

Many of us feel the creeping feeling of dread that happens anytime from about 2pm onwards on a Sunday afternoon.

Sunday Afternoon Anxiety Disorder SAAD Your brain starts thinking about how quickly the weekend has passed and that before you know it Monday morning will be upon you and you will have to traipse off to work.

For some people this is just a sinking feeling and makes you feel a bit sad. You feel you have nothing to look forward to as the week stretches before you.

Often this is the case for people in mundane, unfulfilling jobs. Factory workers, fast food outlet workers, Walmart or the checkout operator at your local supermarket.

But for some Sunday afternoon can create stronger feelings – anxiety, depression and panic at the thought of going to work tomorrow. This is often referred to as Sunday Afternoon Anxiety Disorder or SAAD.

In 2015 Monster.com ran a poll which showed 62% of those surveyed regularly experienced the Sunday Blues.

This can manifest itself in several ways:

  • Lethargy
  • Sleeplessness
  • Foggy brain, inability to concentrate
  • Aggression towards self and others

How to Stop It

The most obvious way is to create the life of your dreams, so it doesn’t matter what day of the week it is you are perpetually happy. And that is what I am working on. I don’t have a problem with hard work, but I want that work to be of direct benefit to me, I want my daily activities to be contributing towards improving my life not just the lives of others.

Many people used to have financial goals or success goals. They knew what it would take for them to feel and know they were successful. After many years of working for others, these goals can start to seem out of reach, in fact often times people forget all about their goals and just sleepwalk through the rest of their lives.

Don’t let this be you.

You can have everything you had ever dreamed of, your financial goals are achievable and you can be a success in your chosen career.

Start your own online business

As I said earlier I have chosen affiliate marketing as my way to escape the Rat Race. While I am still working full-time I have already rid myself of the Sunday afternoon blues this way. Why?

Man in hammock relaxing by waterfallBecause I have a solid plan in place and each and every day I do a little more work towards the end goal of being my own boss and generating the income I know I deserve and I am capable of.

This has provided renewed focus and direction for my life, not only can I see the end game I know I am taking steps every day towards it.

I have reviewed and increased my financial goals. Now I am shooting for the stars.

My online businesses are starting to gain traction. I am making sales and generating traffic across both websites.

And the more committed I am the more successful my businesses become. I am already seeing the fruits of my labours and with my realistic goals in place I know one day I will be the proud owner of my own online empire that creates a passive income for me. I will be able to work less and live more.

But better than that I will never have to dread Sunday afternoons ever again, and I will no longer be one of those “not engaged” workers.

  1. I had no idea the statistics were that bad??? That tells me the reason for the road rage a lot LOL.

This comes at a perfect time as I am trying to get my fiance to quit the 9-5 cause it effects us. She HATES her job lol
    anyway thanks for the insight!
do you really think affiliate marketing is the way to go?

    1. Hi Dennis
I 100{d91f6d3a546aa94218aa52b9342b560c762481951afdde4bbfe6f80b47780330} feel affiliate marketing can be an exit from the 9 – 5 rat race. I know plenty of people who have replaced their full-time wage this way and are now making a living from their hobbies and loving every minute of it. I am not there yet but I am very confident that in the near future I will be one of them also.

It is not a get rich quick scheme, but if your fiancee is prepared to put in the time and effort she could build up an online business that makes her happy and pays the bills. Best of luck to you both.

  2. I am one of those unusual people that actually love my job. I work as a weight loss counselor and get to help obese people lose weight and get healthy. It is really satisfying. However, I also have an affiliate marketing business which I hope one day will be able to support me during my retirement. Or better yet, I will earn enough where I can quit my job and still help people as a counselor from home.

    1. What a wonderful career and a great add-on with the affiliate marketing business Wendy. You truly are one of the fortunate ones. I know plenty of people who are indeed retiring off the earnings of their online businesses and I’m sure you will also.

Best wishes to you on your continued success.

      1. Right on I agree with you, I already work on my own schedule and hope to surpass her income soon to prove to her it’s possible. She has been brainwashed and engineered into debt because she is a nice person. Thank you for the positive vote!

        Keep up uke good work!

  3. I think the main reason I hated my job was simply that I could see better ways to do things? And it’s not hard to see how dissatisfied most people are with their jobs even without statistics. If I’m not engaged with what I’m spending my life doing — life can be miserable. When that’s happening, I may not even realize it’s going to a job everyday that holds no interest or promise for the future.
I changed all of that with online marketing! Every thing I learn, everything I do, and all of my future belongs to me. All I needed was a reliable place to learn how to get started with the training and tools to make my on online business a reality to quit depending on jobs I hated. And I am proud I found Wealthy Affilaite for that opportunity.

    1. Thanks for your comment Mike. I agree wholeheartedly, I think that’s what keeps me so motivated about my website, they are mine 🙂 Every effort I put in is for my benefit, what I am learning is for my improvement and ultimately my ongoing successful career and I am seeing the rewards.

When you work in a 9-5 and give your all every day, making suggestions for improvement that go nowhere, and with no thanks or increase in monetary rewards it gets disheartening and while you might not end up being an active disrupter you certainly start to just go through the motions.

Best wishes for your ongoing success in the affiliate marketing space.

  4. It is so amazing how the majority of the workforces hates their job. If you asked the average working person about their job they will tell you it is paying the bills. I believe that all of us should find what we love and put our best foot forward and go for it. We should find pleasure in what we do. Thanks for sharing a well-detailed post that is a great help.

    1. I know Norman I was staggered by the figures, so many unhappy people. I know what it’s like to get comfortable in a job and just go to work do your job, go home – rinse and repeat. Pretty mundane boring life hey!
I love my new found career in building websites, there is a real joy in helping people and it keeps me engaged and learning every day, I just love it.

Thank you for stopping by, I’m glad you enjoyed the article.
